Stihl History

Stihl Chainsaws have a long history dating back to 1926 when German born Andreas Stihl completed his first prototype, eventually dubbed the tree-felling-machine.

This cross cutting chainsaw would mark the beginning of an easier and faster method for cutting trees. This prototype was a hefty 140 lbs requiring 2 men to operate. Within a few years Andreas built his first factory. Several design changes soon followed, most notably, the switch to a gas powered engine that weighed 100 pounds. These changes would be indicators of a coming revolution in chainsaw design.

As with most innovative technologies, there’s usually a resistance to change. Some loggers felt threatened by the introduction of the chainsaw and the loss of potential jobs, at times even attacking the Stihl salesmen.

The Stihl Companies chainsaws quickly became the leader in chainsaw design setting the standard for future competitors. As with any top rated company, Stihl knew that servicing and supporting its customers was a key factor for growth. Stihl took this commitment seriously as they developed training and safety programs that would pave the way toward customer loyalty.

In the decades that followed Stihl chainsaws improved gradually with several innovations. The automatic chain lubrication system was one important time saving feature, and the reduction of weight was a major concern. By the year 1959, Stihl had achieved a monumental goal by introducing a one person 26 lb chainsaw. Future chainsaws would eventually weigh less than 20 lbs.

The Stihl Company has evolved into an international corporation with a diverse line of products. They now produce tree trimmers, leaf blowers, and protection gear under different subsidiaries. Today Stihl employs over 7000 people with products sold in over 160 countries.
